News Update May 2026

NEWS UPDATE  10 May 2026 Sean writes; Many of you friends and supporters will be aware of our desire to refurbish the original old chapel part of our site.  Some significant structural issues with the main hall has resulted in some necessary major planned demolition work, which began on Saturday and will continue into this week. As one passer-by stopped on Saturday looking at the machines working, he said to me, ‘Zac’s isn’t going is it?’ Very quickly he filled up with tears at the thought of it. ‘Zac’s helped me years ago. Gave me food when I needed it.’ I reassured him, we’re not going anywhere, and we’ll continue to help others in the future, as we had him. On the one hand we are very sad to have to take down a familiar part of the building. On the other, we look forward to being able to redevelop that part of the site to continue our work of mission and service in the community, in the tradition of being followers of Christ, into the future.   ———— Our food and suppor...

New support, opening hours and venue upgrades

Image
We are delighted to be able to announce our new schedule of activity supporting those in our community who are homeless or vulnerably housed. In addition to our long running commitment in making our venue available to the Wallich Rough Sleepers Intervention Team 7 days a week first thing in the morning, alongside healthcare professionals, we are now adopting some additional support.  This new schedule replaces the Thursday and Friday lunch provisions that were set up during Covid and we are returning to primarily concentrate on supporting the most vulnerable, those sleeping rough. It reflects more closely the activity we have engaged in for over twenty years, in partnership with others. We are also delighted to be able to share some photos of our recently refurbished toilet and kitchen facilities. This has been our single most expensive outlay and we could not have done it without the help of a Welsh Government ‘ Community Facilities Programme’   grant. This essential work has...

Underwear wanted

Image
We could do with a restock of  plenty of men's new boxers/pants, all sizes as we head into our new winter opening schedule. Also women's knickers, small and medium. See our revised drop off times below. If you're not local but would like to support us a voucher for Primark - or other stores - allows us to buy what we need when we need it.

The Beatitudes Revisited

Image
Next week we begin a new series in our long running Tuesday Night Tribal Gathering Bible Studies, as we return to explore the Beatitudes of Jesus. Eight nuggets of teaching from Jesus that some would say are way out of reach and others would say are transformational, and deeply counter cultural. Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Gandhi, Oscar Romero, Dorothy Day, and Mother Teresa are among those who testified to the influence of the Beatitudes in how they all worked for justice, resisted oppression with non-violence and served the poor. Jesus presented his ‘Beatitudes’ manifesto for an alternative way, to a crowd of unsettled, angry, marginalised misfits living in the shadow of an oppressive empire and a religious system that had lost it’s way — we’ll return to these words from Matthew chapter 5:1-12 to see what they might mean today. Join us from 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings, for an hour of study and friendly discussion from 8-9pm which we start and end with prayer. We’re still in George ...

Venue Upgrades

Image
Thanks to the generosity of our existing regular supporters and with the additional help of a Welsh Government grant from their 'Community Facilities Programme', and following some essential repairs on the valley gutters to eliminate water ingress, we shall begin work on completely upgrading our toilet facilities on 31 March 2025.  This will be a huge benefit to all those who use our venue, but will obviously disrupt things for a few weeks. (See note below). Following the renovation, there will some changes to our food provision service as we shall be able to welcome people back into the building again.  PLEASE NOTE:  AS OF MONDAY 31 MARCH WE SHALL BE UNDERTAKING ESSENTIAL REPAIRS AND UPGRADES TO THE PREMISES INCLUDING IMPROVED TOILET FACILITIES. This will take between 4 - 5 weeks. During this time: The Wallich Rough Sleepers Intervention Team will continue to provide their essential support  first thing in the morning operating from their van outside of Zac's Place....

Team Member Stuart

Liz writes: Introducing Stu. Some of you will know him; some may not. Stu is employed part-time by Exousia Trust as Buildings Manager at Zac’s Place, but he is so much more than that. He's one of the bible study leaders, and he organises the food distribution on Thursdays and Fridays. He shops, he cooks, he cleans, and he has an enormous heart for our community. In his spare time he's studying for a chaplaincy qualification. If you would like someone to speak about Zac's to your church or community group, either Stu or I would be happy to come along, and tell you all about what goes on here. Well, nearly all . . .

Sean Stillman's MA dissertation, "Zac’s Place:  Critically Examining a Fresh Expression of Church  for Signs of a Renewal Movement"  (Moorlands College / University of Gloucestershire) is now available to download via the Churches Together in England ‘ Mission Research Library ’. You can find the entire library on this link here , and to find Sean's work choose 'topic' and  select the 'Fresh Expressions'  and scroll down the files available.  Alternatively you can go directly to the PDF document here . But we would suggest, if you are engaging in academic research, taking a look through the database of numerous MA and PhD works as there's a wealth of material there. Sean was keen to make his work, which was completed in 2020 with Moorlands College, as accessible as possible, especially for those not familiar with academic papers. We hope it's of use to others as a tool for some critical reflection, as it is currently being used in the life of...

Advent Prayer Calendar Recommendation

Image
We would wholeheartedly recommend this Advent Prayer Calendar hosted by a good friend of ours, Steve Barrington, via a Facebook group. If you're a Facebook User then feel free to check in and take a look. Here's Steve's introduction,  "Welcome back to those who have walked this journey together with us before and welcome to our new friends on the road to Bethlehem this year. December is often a month that rushes by so quickly. It gets filled with trips to shopping centres, fighting the crowds, running to different events, and trying to focus on the birth of Jesus in the midst of it all. So, the invitation is before the first Sunday of Advent, December 3, to write down the names of 21 people - friends, family, enemies, people in our community, randoms from the shops, people in the news - that you would like to pray for. Then allocate one for every day leading up to Christmas and on that day, pray for them. It's a deliberate opportunity to slow down and refocus on t...

Still Inspired by the Call to the Margins

Image
A big part of the Zac’s Place story over the past 25 years, since the earliest days of our forming together as ‘Zac’s Place - Church in Pub?’, has been the place of thorough and methodical reflection of the Bible. As time has gone on, this has continued to shape and challenge our deliberate choice to be at home with those who are marginalised, to engage with pro-active care and be advocates and a voice for those whose voice gets lost. Our roots in the Christian faith have continued to stir us into compassionate action as ‘Zac’s Place -A Church for Ragamuffins’. Zac’s Place has continued to have an ongoing association with God’s Squad Christian Motorcycle Club and in recent weeks, Zac’s Place founder Sean, who is also in senior leadership in GSCMC, has launched a new series of bible reflections from Mark’s gospel. You’ll find the introduction below and in the coming months different GS members, who are also experienced bible teachers, will endeavour to open up this story, as they go thr...

Zac's Place 'One More Mile' Just Giving Campaign

Image
Zac's Place is raising support to assist with sustaining its well established work in Swansea into the next generation. This includes making provision for additional staff and volunteers, and also significant improvements to our city centre HQ. Story Over the years Zac's Place has earned a reputation for providing grass roots essential support to many vulnerable people in Swansea. These maybe those who are sleeping rough, in emergency B&B accommodation, or without a safe place to call home, those in food poverty and those who are seeking a safe space from the traumas that they are experiencing. We have been committed to working in partnership with others including housing and homeless support charities, addiction and recovery agencies, medical outreach teams, the local council, the DWP, the arts and a host of other local churches and volunteer groups. "The work going forward at Zacs Place is in every way innovative, courageous and important for the community in gene...

A Mayoral Visit

Image
It was good to be able to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress of Swansea to Zac's Place recently. Cllr Mike Day and his wife Chris, called in to visit during one of our regular food provision days meeting guests, volunteers and staff, as our hot meals were prepared and served to guests. We are grateful for their genuine interest, encouragement and support for this kind of grass roots community engagement. Typically our guests receiving support are experiencing food poverty one way or another. They may be in temporary B&B accommodation with no cooking facilities, are street homeless or maybe they are housed but are essentially camping inside, not having any cooking facilities available to them. Some are quite simply finding it hard to make ends meet and our meals are a life saver. We provide meals every Thursday and Friday and can serve up to one hundred people each day, This service is part of a city wide partnership with different churches hosting different days making sure there ...
